Why early aspirations support matters
Children begin forming ideas about jobs and futures from as young as seven years old. For many, these ideas are shaped by who they know, the opportunities around them and the social or financial barriers they face. When children grow up with limited exposure to different careers, they can start ruling out options – before they even reach secondary school.
Evidence shows that:
- More than 1 million young people aged 16–24 are currently NEET — a future risk that begins with early disadvantage.
- Only 33% of schools deliver meaningful careers and aspirations education as part of their curriculum.
- 1 in 3 children do not regularly play outdoors, despite evidence linking this to improved wellbeing, resilience and social skills.
These early gaps can influence motivation at school, subject choices, confidence levels and long term life chances.
Aspirations Day Programme Impact
Aspirations Days give children powerful, hands on experiences that spark curiosity, build essential skills, meet real employers and discover careers they may never have known existed.
Community Threads creates a different kind of learning environment: one where children can step away from everyday pressures, try new experiences, connect with nature and begin to see what could be possible for their future.
We help children to:
- Build confidence, teamwork, communication and resilience

Impact highlights:
- 98% of pupils who have already attended described the day as positive and confidence boosting
- 93% said they were excited to learn about new careers
- Children reported first time experiences such as “first time on a bus” and “never seen a cow before”. This is something many of us take for granted but which will stay with children long after the day ends.
- Strong qualitative feedback confirms the day as “transformational”, especially for children from disadvantaged communities
- Wider evidence shows that meeting volunteers from the world of work increases motivation, improves behaviour and strengthens academic engagement.

What are Aspirations Days?
Aspirations Days are full-day experiences for primary-aged children, particularly those from communities facing disadvantage, inequality or limited access to enrichment opportunities.
Each Aspirations Day combines:
- Outdoor learning
- Essential skills development
- Hands on activities
- Real world career exploration and employer engagement
Alongside career insight, pupils develop the skills that make a lasting difference to wellbeing, confidence and future readiness — including resilience, communication, leadership and teamwork.
Children leave with a clearer sense of what is possible, where they might fit and how their learning connects to future opportunities.

Our partnerships across social housing, community, education, health and wellbeing, and business allow us to foster meaningful connections between employers, support networks and opportunities that may otherwise feel out of reach.
Trafford Hall gives us a distinctive setting where young people can step away from their day-to-day pressures, build confidence, support their wellbeing and experience learning in a different way.
The programme is designed for pupils in Years 5 and 6. Priority is given to schools serving disadvantaged communities and communities experiencing higher levels of deprivation across the North West.
Each Aspirations Day typically brings together around 100 pupils from up to three schools, creating opportunities to learn, explore, and build confidence alongside children from different communities.
Aspirations Days currently take place at Community Threads’ home at Trafford Hall in Chester.
Trafford Hall provides a unique learning environment that combines indoor facilities with extensive outdoor space. The 14-acre site, with woodland and green spaces, enables children to experience nature, outdoor learning, teamwork activities and sustainability education in one safe and supportive location.
Each day typically includes:
- Outdoor team-building and problem-solving activities
- Sustainability and environmental education sessions
- A Careers Carousel featuring professionals from a range of sectors
- Opportunities to meet and learn alongside pupils from other schools
The Careers Carousel gives pupils the opportunity to meet professionals from a variety of sectors through short interactive sessions. Children learn about different roles, ask questions, and explore how education can lead to a wide range of future opportunities.
Many children face barriers to accessing educational visits, outdoor learning, and enrichment opportunities. Aspirations Days provide experiences that support confidence, teamwork, environmental awareness, and understanding of future pathways.
Schools interested in participating can contact NCRC to discuss future opportunities, eligibility, and programme availability.
NCRC works with funders, partners, and supporters to remove barriers to participation wherever possible. Funding often contributes towards delivery costs and, where available, transport support for schools.
Businesses, charities, and community organisations can support the programme through funding, volunteering, providing career speakers, sharing expertise, or helping to create meaningful learning experiences for participating children.
Pupils and teachers complete feedback surveys at the end of each programme. NCRC uses both quantitative and qualitative feedback to measure outcomes including confidence, engagement, awareness of future opportunities, teamwork, and environmental understanding.
Previous feedback has shown strong outcomes, with pupils reporting increased confidence, greater optimism about the future, stronger awareness of career opportunities, and improved skills such as teamwork and communication.
